Instead of false eyelashes and five coats of mascara, more and more beauty enthusiasts are opting for a special base under their mascara. One product in particular is making the rounds in drugstores: the Variete Lashes Show Lash Primer from Eveline Cosmetics. The idea behind it is simple – first a creamy lash base, then the application of colored mascara. This is supposed to be enough to make even thin lashes look as if individual tufts have been applied.
What an eyelash base actually does
A base under mascara might sound unnecessary at first. In practice, it works like an invisible builder: The primer forms a light, slightly creamy layer around each lash. This creates a kind of „base“ on which the mascara adheres better and becomes more visible.
The primer thickens and lengthens the lashes before any color even comes into play – that’s what makes the difference.
The Variete Lashes Show Lash Primer has a deliberately creamier texture. It’s not liquid like a classic mascara, but rather slightly pasty. This makes the lashes appear fuller and more substantial. The light shade of the base is an added benefit: you can immediately see if every single lash has been coated.
Only then is the actual mascara applied. The already built-up layer makes the black or brown color appear more intense. The lashes gain more definition without the need for multiple coats. One coat of mascara applied over the base can look like two or three coats without this intermediate step.
Why eyelash primers are suddenly trending again
Products for strengthening the lash line existed before, but they were considered niche products for professionals. In times of artificial lashes, lash lifts, and lash serums, they are making an unexpected comeback – primarily because many women are looking for a lighter alternative to long-term treatments.
A primer combines several effects in one step:
- Volume enhancement: Each eyelash appears slightly thicker and more coated.
- Length enhancement: The ends are visibly emphasized before the color is applied.
- Better curl: After curling with lash curlers, the eyelashes remain more stable in shape.
- More intense color: Black or brown appears significantly richer on a light base.
- Fewer layers: The desired effect is achieved with less mascara – this is gentler on the hairs.
This is particularly attractive for everyday wear: The eyes appear more awake and defined, without that heavy, clumpy look that many people associate with too much mascara. Instead of clumped „spider legs,“ the result is a separate, fanned-out set of lashes that looks more structured.
A primer can change the look with just the first brushstroke.
Upon application, the first thing you notice is the light color of the base. It coats each lash and immediately reveals any gaps. Even at this early stage, the lashes appear thicker and more defined. The primer separates the fine hairs and prevents them from clumping together later.
